SADTU Supports The #TotalShutDown March Against Women Abuse

1 August 2018

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) fully supports the #TotalShutDown march to the Union Buildings against women abuse.

Although the main purpose of the march is to demand that government pay attention to the continued spate of violence against women and girls and a National Indaba on gender based violence; SADTU believes that fighting this scourge is not for government alone but it requires the community as a whole.

As a Union in the education sector, we would like to see more investment towards the development of the curriculum that will help to break gender stereotypes that lead to the objectification of women in our society. We reject the patriarchal construct in which both women and girls are seen as inferior beings and as objects to be abused by men.

We urge every member of the society to do all they can to fight violence and asset the human rights of women.
