The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), as an affiliate of COSATU, pledges solidary with fellow sister Unions - the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU) who embarked on strike action over salaries.
Thousands of SACTWU members in the footwear industry are on strike demanding a 9,5% package increase. The employer has tabled a 6,25% final wage offer.
Members of CWU who work in the Post Office are demanding a 10% increase. After their one-day strike, employers moved from a 0% offer to 6%. Workers in the Post office have not had a salary increase for two years.
Workers are struggling to make ends meet following the increase in VAT and petrol price. The increase in the price of fuel, almost on a monthly basis, has a direct impact on the lives of workers as it has seen in increase in the price of food, transport and many basic amenities. We call on employers to respect and appreciate their workers and remunerate them accordingly as they are key in the development of their companies.
An injury to one is an injury to all!
