Top leaders of the Tripartite Alliance - COSATU President Sidumo Dlamini, SACP Deputy Chairperson Thulas Nxesi and a senior ANC representative will address the first day of the National General Council of SADTU which starts tomorrow at the Premier Hotel, O R. Tambo - Rhodesfield - Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will also address the gathering, in her capacity as the minister, later in the day. More than 250 members, including guests, are expected to meet from 25 - 27 October 2013. The NGC is one of the highest decision-making structures of the Union in-between congress. It convenes at least once a year to ratify decisions taken by the National Executive Committee of the Union and implement policies on major importance.

Some of the issues the NGC will discuss and debate will include the upcoming national general elections and on-going policy discussions on education like competency tests, teacher development, initial training of teachers (including the recruitment of the correct caliber into the profession; Early Childhood Development - the formalization thereof and the improvement of the conditions of service; the violence against teachers, the posture of the department of education on collective bargaining and attitude of the department towards proper consultation as required by legislation will be amongst the hot issues to be discussed.

The second day of the Council will be closed as members sit in commissions to deliberate on Education, Socio Economic, International and Politics matters.

On the third and last day on Sunday, the NGC will read out a declaration from the Council and South Africa left with almost five months to host its General elections in April next year, SADTU will officially launch its general elections campaign.
